Specialist Sports College

Failsworth School was designated a Sports College in 2000. As a Sports College we offer tremendous opportunities for participation and development in sport and other extra curricular activity. Our students don't have to be gifted in sports to benefit from this. We are ambitious for all our students in every aspect of their learning and development in the college. Our status is a reflection of our commitment to excellence. Your child will have many opportunities to develop, in sport, in the classroom and in all aspects of their lives as a student at Failsworth.

Many of our students enjoy sport which helps raise levels of motivation and performance. It also helps youngsters gain confidence, self-esteem, qualifications and develop a positive attitude to a healthy lifestyle. This has a knock-on effect into other aspects of life, both in school and outside it.

Our status as a Specialist Sports College means that we have more resources to encourage effective learning at all levels of ability. We also remain a college committed to working with our Local Authority and with neighbouring schools, for the benefit of the Failsworth community. We act as the hub for a Schools Sports Partnership which unites Secondary and Primary Schools locally.

We work very closely with key sporting bodies, such as the Youth Sport Trust to provide excellent facilities and opportunities for youngsters. We are particularly well-equipped to support students with potential in reaching the highest level of sport. Our facilities are undoubtedly among the best in the Borough.

The school enjoys considerable success in many sports. In 2009-10, eleven different teams were champions of Oldham at football, basketball, rugby, badminton and swimming. Each year group has numerous individual elite athletes, in such sports as table tennis, squash, motorcycling, and golf. Our elite athletes are each assigned a school sports mentor, and supported to enjoy success in both academic and sporting terms.

Our students and staff have the advantage of working within the framework of the specialist school organisation. We can share information and development with other nationally recognised centres of excellence in education. Increasingly we are working internationally as well, for example as part of a Comenius Project with schools in Greece, Spain, Norway and Poland, and a Connecting Classrooms project with Jordan (Middle East). All this directly benefits your child.

We place an especially strong emphasis on achievement, both in sport and in all other aspects of learning. We strive to give our students the best possible learning opportunities, whilst emphasising that participation, commitment and personal enthusiasm is the key to their future success.

We have a winning team which is open for all to join.
